Ever since I started the period club in the 6th grade, I have been fascinated with everything that goes on with my body every month. I want to know every nook and cranny of how my hormones work, what my period means, and what to eat, so that I can look and feel my best!
Menstruation is an overlooked, underutilized vital sign and just like blood pressure can tell us much about the state of our health. When your period goes missing, you know that something is amiss, but there are also many other, less obvious indicators we can observe that will give us useful information about our overall health. I’m so passionate about periods, I made TV – menstrual history by speaking about the importance of our periods on the Dr Oz show last year.
The appearance of your menstrual blood and the duration of your period can reveal a hormonal imbalance that will lead to other health issues. It’s possible to heal all hormonal imbalances and their resulting symptoms by addressing diet and lifestyle.
Here we help you decode this important vital sign and start working towards a healthier menstrual cycle.
For a visual on each of the below possibilities check out the link to the Dr Oz show and my demonstrations.
What’s normal?
The ideal cycle is 5-7 days, starts and ends with a bright happy cranberry color and is the consistency of jello mix that hasn’t set yet (medium viscosity, not too thin, not too thick) and occurs every 28-30 days.
There are many dietary and lifestyle reasons why this cycle gets thrown off for us women. Sometimes is a one or two month situation, and sometimes cycle issues can last years.
I want you to observe your cycle every month as a barometer of how well your diet and lifestyle are supporting your hormones. If your cycle isn’t as I described above then you’ve got to immediately make diet changes to get your cycle back to a healthy flow.
Here’s a guide for you to use for interpreting the color of your cycle every month and my favorite FLO fixes for each to bring you quickly back to good.
Interpreting Your Period
If you have:
Brown, spotty stains to start
Has your period started? What is that brown stuff exactly? Should you count this day as day one?
That brown stuff is old oxidized blood that didn’t make it out of your uterus last cycle. This is caused by low levels of progesterone. Low progesterone is the trigger for many period-related problems. You may also struggle to ovulate regularly in addition to having the odd coloration and you may also develop irregular cycles, or PCOS.
The FLO fix:
The herb vitex is a great treatment for this issue as it helps the pituitary gland make more Luteinizing hormone indirectly supporting your progesterone production.
Eating eggs with the yolk contains progesterone precursors.
Taking extra B6 will get those levels up and help your period start the cranberry red color you’re meant to see on day one.
Heavy Bleeding with Clots
Are you changing your pad or tampon once an hour? Do you have special sheets for that time of the month? Do you have large clots that are dark purple in color?
Specifically, you have elevated estrogen levels. Estrogen builds the lining of your uterus. If you’re eating a diet that prevents your liver from breaking down this hormone, it can build up and wreak havoc on your cycle. In addition to the heavy bleeding and clots, you may also struggle with endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, or polyps.
The FLO fix:
Milk thistle is an herb that helps detoxify the liver and helps even out estrogen.
Learning uterine massage technique via an experienced practitioner will help uterine congestion and lessen clotting.
Increasing the amount of water you drink and eating more leafy greens like collards and kale will assist the estrogen detox process.
Take liquid chlorophyll to boost iron in your blood and deal with the anemia that typically develops from chronic heavy bleeding.
Very short periods, very light bleeding, skipped periods
Is it coming? Spotting for several days?
A short period (less than 3 days in length) and only light bleeding can indicate low estrogen levels. Your hormones are made from the food you eat, so your low estrogen is likely due to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies from improper and extreme dieting as well as from adrenal burnout.
The FLO fix:
Eat protein – hormones are made from amino acids – you can’t get your estrogen up if you can’t make enough of it from your food!
Eat fat – especially omega 3s – which helps stabilize hormone production in the body.
Super short cycles (if you’re bleeding twice or more within a 28-36 day cycle)
Didn’t you just have your period like last week? Does it seem like you are constantly starting your period?
This can indicate a sluggish thyroid even though you might be within normal range on your blood work.
The FLO fix:
Try supplementing with Gaia Herbals Thyroid Support as a start.
Make sure your salt contains iodine to support your thyroid.
Eat sea veggies – thyroid happy food!
What about cramps?
Get to the root of your period imbalance and cramps go away. The catch is that the more you take pain relievers for cramps, the more they congest your liver, interfere with estrogen metabolism – well, you see it’s a vicious cycle. Start looking before you flush every month, make the necessary food changes, and try Oona Cramp Relief for a natural alternative to ibuprofen. More on this topic on Friday!
What about PMS?
Check out my post on foods to fight PMS here for more ideas and recipes.
As always, go have a chat with your OBGYN! They can provide the physical examination and blood work needed to diagnose you with a specific issue. Check out my post on interpreting those test results for a step-by-step guide to this process here.
If something does come up, tell your OBGYN you want to take 3 to 6 months to try out an alternative route using food instead of medication like we do at FLO Living and use the guide above to make diet changes first.
Just be prepared to hear that the usual treatment offered will be either painkillers or hormonal birth control methods such as the birth control pill or hormone-based IUD. Hormonal birth control can relieve symptoms short term, but it masks the root causes of your period problems and can make them much worse long term, not to mention the effects on your fertility. The truth is that most period problems and hormonal imbalance symptoms can be healed long term with diet and lifestyle changes. Read more about my thoughts on this here.
Good things come in threes:
I want to hear from you!
First, which period symptoms affect you most?
Second, what #FLOfix did you try?
Third, you know every one you know is hormonal – spread a little good ovary karma and share this article on social by clicking the buttons below

I am the same i have a 3 years old child and if i squeeze my breast i am still producing milk at first it was a browny colour now it just like normal milk. Firstly i had implant in my harm took it out 4 months now and trying to get pregant, i am not having any luck, my peroids changes every month they same to be 2 days later than the last one.
I wondered if its because i am producing milk, if thats the problem i can’t get pregant..advice anyone plz
Hi. Just read your comment and wanted to say that the milk in your breasts is totally normal. Every mom ive met and in my community has same thing and so do i but mine is more very dry. I just made sure to try and get every ounce of it out after i finished breastfeeding. So that shouldnt be a problem as to why your not getting pregnant. Hope all is getting better for you!
I wish to caution that its important to know that milk coming out from breasts when you aren’t breastfeeding is a problem. I found out its the reason I haven’t been getting pregnant since I have too much prolactin hormone. I am taking medication to bring it down. I also discovered it can cause vision problems a condition known as plactinoma. Could be a benign tumor on the pituitary gland. Just realized I wasnt seeing well wh en I started taking the medication. Please address the milk issue and get your hormones balanced as it sure could be the reason why you are not conceiving.
I been using birth control for almost 6 years now I’m 26 every year I have done a 2 month break without the pill.I never read the effect of the birth control cuz I’m scared in a way what it says but the other side i dont wanna get pragnant and this is the only protect I like, but I really wanna how bad is the birth contro?
Hii. Im currently spotting brown. it started on the day i should get my normal period. its been 10 days and its still not stopping. I dont know if this is my period or im just having a light and brown one.
Hey! Thanks for sharing this post with us 🙂 By that, i have one question..for the first time, today my period lasting for 10 day..when period started, i started eating contraception..but the contraception tablets are the same, as 1 year ago, so i didnt try other tablets. What i`m asking now is, how can I interpret all that, and what could I do. Tenkju for answering*
So far despite my age my ovulation is pretty steady (I chart fully by saliva, temp, graphing and once in a while ovulation test. Heredity dictates menopause will likely hit around 60 which is when women in my family stop having children until my generation). My menses not so much, and this is not new thing though after my second pregnancy I stopped having freak out, break steel in bare hands cramps. But they always been fast horrific flow for 3-4 days with occasional breaks of late let down and long , horrid, near illness producing bloating for 7-10 day lovely addition of pieces of calf liver (I honest;y thought first one like that in my teens .. it was an organ come loose >___<. But really I would like not to be middle ages and hide for week at a time becuase my heavy messy menses.
Thank you for this wonderful article.
I can relate to the low levels of progesterone, but have also noticed that my cycle is very irregular after getting a copper IUD.
I’ve had it for 6 months now as the most natural and safe option I could find next to the fertility method. How do I know wether my symptoms are related to the IUD or to missing out on the suggested food and supplements recommended in this article? What is your opinion on the copper IUD health wise?
Thank you for any help!
I am in the same situation Michala! I chose the copper IUD to avoid unnecessary hormones (the doc said that our bodies make hormones so there was no need for me to avoid the “artificial” ones—ha!). I am experiencing looong cycles, with lots of brown stuff right before, and lots of brown stuff after. I’ve had mine for 15 months though.
I too have opted for a cooper IUD to avoid synthetic hormones. I’m wondering if it’s still affecting my own bodie’s production of hormones though? My period lasts 5-7 days and is really heavy the first 3 days! Thoughts on this method of birth control would be very helpful. Thanks!
I am currently 51 and halloween night i started my period, hmmm a few days off but ok, fine…two weeks later, i have a light 2-3 day period, 6 weeks goes by I have my period again. christmas morning i start spotting lightly again, Tues Jan 6th dark brown spotting occurs Sun Jan 11 the bleeding and clotting starts week two and I am clotting that it is concerning me, my bleeding is heavy but consistent no more no less, week three i call my obgyn make an appt, have an ultra sound she knows I have fibroids so she can see nothing to cause the bleeding, she schedules an outpatient d @ c. mild spotting two days after surgery and 1 polyp non cancerous biopsied. a week later I get my results. no cancer (YAY!) my body is producing too much estrogen causing the excessive bleeding. I am on Norethindrone 14 days on 14 days off.
I wish I had found this website 3 months ago.
I’m two years younger than you, was in a similar situation, though not as bad. I’ve tried Vitex and it helped, but it takes a bit of patience, things get almost worst the first few months, then start getting better, and at six months, everything finally is normal for me. It is the natural alternative to progesterone, which isn’t really the best option because it can increase your health risks, even if nature-identical.
Low estrogen? And that to be increased by eating food? .I eat alot! Still I’m having irregular periods. What should I do?
Please help!
I have this same trouble. Have put on tons of weight, feel like I’m PMS’ing all the time… PMS is getting worse and worse. Two days of heavy bleeding then spot for a few more… My doc said I’m in perimenopause and my estrogen is low. I did not relate to any of the issues you described above.
Hira, did you get a reply?
Hi
After reading the period tips I can’t help but be worried about my monthly friend Flo’s condition. Ever since I gave birth 3 years ago my periods have been extremely heavy and I pass huge huge clots that scare me alot of the time. They are dark and look like body parts sorry if I gross anyone out but I’m just being honest. Before child birth I hardly had a period. I also now often soak thru my clothes and the second day is when I pass the clots. Its bad enough I’m already chronic anemic so after the 2 day I nearly struggle to even get out of bed. Mind u I have chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism that all zap whatever energy I could of had. Basically I’m a walking zombie the only reason I even open my eyes every morning is because my gorgeous little girl needs her mommy if it wasn’t for my little princess I think I’d sleep the days away. Do u think I should see a specialist? Also I have had rapid weight gain in the last few months that I can’t stand or figure out why this is happening. I barely eat enough to survive much less gain almost 30 pounds. Its very frustrating and I’m totally miserable. I am prescribed levothyroxine 75mcg but it did nothing for me so j stopped taking it. I know my thyroid isn’t working properly but no doctor seems to think I’m right. All j hear is to exercise more and eat more fruits and vegetables. Ya right I’ve tried everything And nothings worked.could this all be happening for the same reason? Adrenal burnout? I don’t know but I do this anymore Cuz if I gain anymore weight I don’t think I will be able to handle it. Any advice would be so much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I feel like you just described me other than me not having a child. my periods have always been like that with the heavy flow and huge painful clots since i started my period 13 years ago. my thyorid levels were in the normal range but on the high side of the spectrum so they put me on the levothoroxyn too but i never thought my periods could effect my thyroid until i found this sight. ive been steadily gaining weight over the years and its gotten much worse this past two years no matter what diet or exercise program i try. so hang in there it sucks but it helps me to know im no the only one dealing with thesee frustratin body issues.
Darling, get your iron levels up immediately. You will feel so much better. Try Susan Weeds Blood Builder tincture. (Food based in ACV). Eat hemme and non- hemme sources of iron w/vitamin C foods (squeeze of lime, strawberries etc) to increase absorption. Address your diet. I stopped eating gluten, dairy, all sugar and processed foods. Increased greens intake big time and did a fertility cleanse. The cleanse included milk thistle and cleansed my liver. The greens I was eating helped flush the estrogen in this process.
The diet completely eliminated clots, heavy bleeding and cramps for me!
Get checked for Hashimoto’s disease w/a blood test . And ck your cortisol for adrenal fatigue. Feel better girl. You got this!
I’m already starting to get so much information from the emails only! I did figure that the brown spotting at the beginning and end of my cycle were due to old and oxidized blood but didn’t know what’s causing it. This probably also explains how I somehow got a false positive pregnancy while on hormonal birth control a few months ago. Thank you so much for sharing!!
I’m suffering PMS symptoms right now. Low energy, body aches, fluctuations in body temperature (usually too warm), restlessness, at least one or two nights of insomnia because of the restlessness & body aches, major breast tenderness, ridiculous food cravings for sugar and salt and protein, ravenous appetite, and mood swings (from irritable to weepy).
I hate this time of month, I really do. It makes me feel uncomfortable in my own skin and out of control — of my body and my mind and personality — and that’s a terrible feeling.
I have been to soooo many doctors who typically look at me like I’m a mystery when I describe my flo problems. I’ve had surgery for endometriosis but they found nothing. I got more answers reading this article than I have in 8 years going to several OBGY’s. Thanks going to try this immediately.
Crystal – you are going to make me cry. I know EXACTLY how you have felt – I was just like you – I KNEW something was off, but no OBGYN would take me seriously. I vowed to make sure every woman would have access to this information so we could end that suffering and here you are – my article helping you get to the right solution faster. This makes me so happy and inspired to keep sharing the FLO gospel! Please keep me updated of your progress!! xoxo Alisa
I feel exactly the same – been to all doctors I can reach out to and nothing they simply stare at me in wonder and tell me not to stress as everything is perfect ….but no desired result.I’ve tried and done so many even obtrusive things to find sth but no answer to anything.I feel so alone in this even though so many women go through so much. I feel every kind of burnout possible. will try all of this
I actually have been through surgery, and, unfortunately, they did find endometriosis. Will any of these dietary guidelines help endo pain and symptoms, or is this only for unidentified causes of pain and infertility?
Hi there. So I’m almost certain I have hormonal issues due to my consistent stubborn acne on my chin, so I’ve been doing hormone happy things low stress sleep regular eating. Except this months period that started yesterday has been watery in texture and not the usually red color. More of like a burgundy. So reccomendations? Have a lovely day filled with sunshine and love.
Thanks so much for the advice i ‘ve got, however, i’m worried, though my periods are regular, it only takes my two days to have my menses which i feel is not normal. The last day is just drops unlike in my 20s and teens i used to have 4 four to five days flow sometimes even twice a month. Could i be having a problem?
You should go to your doctor to get your fsh levels checked.
Hi. 🙂 I’m wondering what you do if you have several of these issues at the same time? Im 31, used to be able to set a watch from it, but my flo is suddenly every 24-26 days. That’s my main question, as I can not find *anything* about what could cause it to suddenly be early? We all know what can make it late, but early? For months on end?
That being said, it is shorter, only 3-4 days (used to be 7. Exactly), begins on day 1 super light, but days 2&3 are MUCH heavier, (changing every 30-45 minutes)), then boom, it’s over. Also, since I began my period at 9, I’ve had such bad “first day” troubles that I would actually pass out at school, have hot flashes at 10, and be sent home. ((still all happens)). Since I have all of the issues you described above, I’m unsure what diet changes to make… just eat everything? (kidding, haha) Thanks for reading, to anyone who has. 🙂
Mae, I’m 31 and have exactly the same symptoms you do. You’re describing me completely! I’m going to take the Milk Thistle and thyroid support.
my cycle is around 28-30 days. the color and consistency is right. but it only lasts 2 days. then it’s brownish red spotting for a few days. is that caused by an imbalance? also when i’m sexually active the consistency is really thin. should that be a concern? this is amazing by the way!!
Hi Alisa,
I am new to Floliving as I have recently had some health issues and managed to find this page.
I am concerned about my hormonal health. I was diagnosed last year with Coeliac disease and have suffered severe intestinal damage and malabsorption issues. I’d been on the pill for about 15 years because each time I came off it I’d have pain and nausea and fainting etc. I now know this would have been caused by the coeliac disease.
My periods were very regularas soon as I stopped the pill but very red and thin and only really lasting for about 2 days. I just thought this was my normal cycle as I don’t really know what it’s meant to be like.
However, this month I have had no blood but all of the symptoms such as abdominal aching and bloating. However, I am still really bloated and have been for weeks now. I’m up to day 35 and no sign of coming on.
I recently had blood tests for my hormone levels and was told that I have really high FSH levels even for someone mid cycle. This is really upsetting I am 37. I am due to have more blood tests when I’m having a period – but like I said it’s not appearing.
I have started following FloLiving and have bought the book. I have begun taking supplements. Femidophilus (as I had recurring bouts of BV) Chlorophyll and Vitex.
Do you have any suggestions or further advice?
Anything would be greatly appreciated
Kind Regards
Maria
alisa, i am probably your polar opposite when it comes to this sort of thing: you started a “period club” and i went home from school after “the talk” and demanded a hysterectomy (which, needless to say i never got). a couple years later when i actually got my period i truly began to wish my mother had listened to my request: i hated every last second of it, i got cramps so bad that i would actually pass out, and no amount of otc pain relievers (including those specifically formulated for pms) seemed to help in the least, my cycle was always erratic and unpredictable (i would have my 7-day period, it would go away for a few days, and then i would get it again for anywhere from 5-10 days), and even almost 25 years later, even though it’s mellowed out a bit in my old age, just thinking about it induces eye-rolling, teeth-gritting, and the urge to curl up in a ball and hide. i intend to try almost everything mentioned here (although apart from the herbs, most of the foods you mention are already a regular part of my diet. but seriously, i can’t wait to see if this works (or at least helps)!
Is it possible to be low estrogen , and estrogen dominant interchangeably or even at the same time?, I have breast tenderness, clotty dark period, but than super short and light 2, 3 days only period. I have Hashimoto’s, (23 days cycle) and gluten intolerance. Have had insomnia for few years now, so I know I’m dealing with adrenal fatigue. Any suggestions on figuring out my estrogen balance?
I was on birth control from age 13 to 28 when I got pregnant with my son (on the pill). Started so young bc my cramps were pure torture & cycle irregular.
Now I’m on para guard which has been great but my PMS is awful and cramps are still torture.
I’m most concerned with my PMS.. I turn into a complete monster! And I eat nonstop, mostly chocolate. How can I alleviate these?
Please help!!
I suffer terrible headaches whenever I’m off the pill and getting my period. Any suggestions? I will literally fight a headache the whole week!
Hi Bonnie,
Your headaches are related to the hormonal fluctuations that occur at this time of the month, and are a sign of hormonal imbalance. It is not, in any way shape, or form a “normal” sign of PMS! I would suggest that you look closer into your hormonal health. A great way to explore this is to speak with one of our counselors for a complementary consult. You can schedule that here: http://bit.ly/12Xruvm
Alisa, I’m currently reading your book, almost through Part II. I’ve learned so much already.
I was diagnosed hypothyroid at age 3 and have been overweight my entire life. Since age 15, at least 100lbs overweight. I haven’t had a period in over a year. I am 39. When I did have periods they were all over the map. I never tracked my period since they were never regular. I’d be regular for 6 months and then they’d be off again. I’ve had from the very light, spotting more than once a month for few days, up through bleeding so heavily that I would get lightheaded. I’ve had periods that lasted weeks at a time…and some lasting almost a month.
I used to be glad at times that I didn’t have many periods and didn’t have to “deal”. Other women said I was lucky. However, now, with not having had one in so long…I don’t see it that way. I’m trying to get my health, hormones, in balance, and want periods. I know that being under 40 and not having periods that it’s a sign of a deeper issue. I occasionally have undercurrents of hormones that I still feel things going on. Not cramping really, but some of the other same signs of PMS that I used to have such as certain moods and lower back pain. Not just any moodiness and lower back pain, but the kind I only felt when I had PMS. But I never have a period. I’m looking to do your 4-day detox when I get done with the book. I’ve been told about tracking with the moon cycles, but don’t really know what to do since I’m not actually having a period or even the “hormonal undercurrents” on a regular basis. Would love to hear what you think I should do, or at least start with.
Thanks again for vital, relevant info!!
Like Michala, I have the copper IUD and have been having trouble ovulating. I am 29 but I started having trouble ovulating since I got off the pill at 24. I had to take pills to ovulate, and that is when I conceived my first baby. I had another lil one 2 years ago and then got on the copper IUD. I have the brownish spots that last more than the bleeding, and the blood itself is a yellowish color instead of the bright cranberry.
I eat a lot of eggs though! And take cod liver oil, and a multivitamin with a bunch of B vitamins.
I get a lot of mood swings too, and feel PMS symptoms for many days before my period makes its very late arrival!
I have DEBILITATING cramps and most recently ones that are starting to happen at ovulation, too. Heavy, clotty and dark for the first 2-3 days at first then light the other 7. My doctor didn’t feel any fibroids but I’m in the middle of getting ultrasounds and all that annoying stuff. I was prescribed 2g fish oil and ibuprofen. I just don’t know that THAT is going to help me get back on track. I so appreciate this article, getting to the root cause is #1 and being a woman, I would LOVE to be able to enjoy my moon cycle and allow it to be there with me instead of the awful pain I feel monthly.
So I’m experiencing irregular periods. I Have always been regular until July I got my period when I was supposed to it was light compared to my regular period. A week later at the end of the month I got it again another period which looked more like My regular period. I freaked out cause I have never gotten 2 periods in one month. Is sept 6 and I got what is supposed to be my period but is extremely light again I have a feeling I’m going to get another heavier period this month. I’m not pregnant or I’m not on any birth control only condoms. I usually get Pap smears every year all years I have been fine. Should I be concerned? I already made appt with my dr for this years annual.
Hi Ana,
You are having signs of hormone disruption – this is something you want to get a handle on sooner rather than later! I would like to offer that you speak with one of the counselors at Flo Living; they can give you some insight as to why these irregularities are occurring, and also what you can do about it!

Every month i get my period very ontime but it last 3 days max, very spotting …. I dont understand if is the food bc i do eat lots of protein and omega (im vegetarian), and im scared of going out of the borth control pill… What other options do i have different from wearing condoms? And what should i implement to my diet to improve my flow?
Loved your book…. Changed many things except the birth control pill

Which organic b6 vitamin brand do you recommend???
I would love to know too! Jarrow doesn’t have one.
Alisa, can you do a post on copper IUDs? I took myself off the pill when my period disappeared, it came back after a while (with vitex) and now I’ve had the IUD for over 6 months and I’m having symptoms that I feel like are pretty common and I don’t understand why. Are you against or for the copper IUD?
Hi, I don’t know if I’m normal in the menstral department. I’m 34, have a to the date on time 28 day cycle. I’ve recently got blood work
I actually have a question. So, on a wednesday I woke up with a massive migraine and i took Excedrin thinking it would go away and it didnt. My co-worker gave me relpax pills they are for migraines so I took it and the pain didnt go away. I thought my head was going to explode. My other co-worker suggested taking IB Profin so I did. Finally the pain went away. well on Thursday I got my period and it was brown. I wasnt worried because there are times the first day it comes brown but then it gets red. Well, this time that didnt happen. My period was brown and I hardly anything for 4 days. not once was it red. Is that normal? could it be because i took so many pain killers the day before? please help.
Hi Josie,
Brown at the beginning of the period indicates low progesterone, and is an issue that we see a lot. The cyclical migraines are also a symptom of hormone imbalance, and are totally treatable by healing that imbalance! So, hang in there!
You can get some insight into all of this if you can pick up a copy of the WomanCode book – you will learn a lot about what a normal period should look like, and also what symptoms can point to what hormones being out of balance. This would be a great place for you to start!
Alisa
Brown, spotty stains to start. I don’t see purple in the clots; to me they’re more black. Before I had my son 14 years ago my cramps were in the front. Since then I experience them in my back. Along with sciatic type pain or menstrual migraines but these aren’t every month.
Hi, please answer my question, my period has been going on for 14 days & I don’t know what to do? I want it to go away, I’ve done everything I can for it to go away.
Hello Alisa,
If the brown spotting is happening not at the beginning but at the end of my period is that also a sign of low progesterone?
Ok! I have irregular periods but I can count on one thing; it to be heavy. Well this last montbive been under a LOT of stress and drama but when my period came it was a day early, very light the first day then heavy for two days then stopped. Then 3r hours later started again but it’s still lite, barely any blood. Any suggestions as to what’s going on?
Hi Michaela,
Yes! Stress has a HUGE influence on our hormones… I cannot underline that enough! From the little bit you have mentioned here, I will say this: if your periods are getting lighter, there is probably an issue with estrogen and progesterone levels – estrogen is needed to build up the lining of the uterus, if there is not enough of it, then the bleed will be light. Low progesterone can show up as brown spotting, or stops and starts in your bleed. I would recommend that you learn more about how to balance blood sugar and support those adrenals!

HI Alisa,
I’m 32 and trying to get pregnant. last month I had light brown / red spotting that i thought was my period and then it stopped. The next week I got my period on schedule and it lasted for the normal about of 6-7 days, starting heavy and then getting lighter. Mine has always been this way minus the weird period like symptom that happened the week before. Enter the new month, and the same thing just happened. I received two days of what I thought was my period, very light spotting and brownish but now it is gone. My normal period should actually be next week. I took a pregnant test to rule out implantation bleeding but they came back negative. I have a 2 year old, so I haven’t had much issue getting pregnant in the past, and my cycle has been pretty on point regular. Any idea what I should do or what the light bleeding might be? It’s making the calculation of ovulation difficult. After reading your article not sure what category I fit into and I just moved to a new state so I haven’t yet established a new gyno… any help or suggestions you could give would be so much appreciated.
This article is very informative but there is one thing you don’t really talk about, long cycles. I know you mentioned missed periods in the short/light period section, which I have also had for my last couple of cycles. But, what about a “regular” cycle that is just long? For instance, I get my period about every 6 weeks (seems to be around a 40 day cycle) and it has been that way ever since I got off birth control about 7 years ago, aside from the approximate 5 year break due to 2 pregnancies and breastfeeding (which I am still currently doing). My sister has the same natural 6 week cycle. When we both started our periods though our periods were very random and we would routinely go 3 months or so with out a period. I know for me hormonal birth controls would regulate my cycle but they caused many other problems and I usually couldn’t be on a specific pill or method for much longer than a year. There aren’t any fertility issues, although its possible I ovulate at random times in my cycle or possibly multiples times during a cycle. My oldest was conceived (based on ultrasound dating) 2 weeks after I started my period while my second was conceived (again based on ultrasound dating) 4 weeks after I started my period. Do you have any insight into what could be causing these long cycles?
Hi Jessica,
Irregular periods are very common, though not normal! They are an indication that the hormone levels and ratios are not optimal. The WomanCode protocol absolutely handles this, you are in the right place! I am thrilled that you are asking the questions and starting to figure this out! Low progesterone, among other things, could be contributing to long and irregular cycles.

Well I just started yesterday and I have to change my pad every hour or so there’s no pain to it , but its weird I need help please respond about what is happening to me
Hi Delnay,
Heavy bleeding can be a sign of estrogen dominance, fibroids or endometriosis. I would schedule an appointment with your Obgyn to go over your blood work and perhaps a transvaginal ultrasound so see if there is anything to be seen. Then, I would start following steps to reduce estrogen in the body. A great place to start is with blood sugar balancing, and cutting out caffeine.

Hi, everyone! So I have a question, hopefully you guys have an answer. I’m 20 years old and my period is pretty regular. I should be expecting AF in 7 days, and about a week ago I started experiencing breast pain which is not normal for me. Is there any chance my body is changing and this is becoming a new pms symptom? I was told most likely it isn’t, but every woman is different.
So I had an implant for 6 years total (obviously changed as required) this was because of birth control as well as heavy and painful periods with diarrhea and vomiting. I had this removed and for 7 months things were great…. then my periods changed now I get two days of minimal bleeding which is a dark brown/rust colour then 3.5 days of extreme heavy painful clots with the diarrhea and vomiting and then 1.5 to 2 days of slowly lightening and fading blood which is a medium red colour…. for the seven months prior to this is was the same as before the implant but with less pain and no vomiting and diarrhea. I had an ultrasound done before the implant and everything was fine. Im not sure what to do now. Do I get another one done or what? Its been strange for the last three.months is consistent in start and finish times but yeah the colour, pain, vomiting and diarrhea worry me a bit. My mum said she was the same back in the day…
Hi Hayley,
I am so sorry to hear this! I would go to the doctor to get some hormone tests and an ultrasound done. Severe PMS is something that we handle here, and it can improve, I promise!!! Going back on the implant will not help your body heal, so when/if you get off of it again you will most likely have a recurrence. The dark brown and clotting are both clear signs of an imbalance in progesterone and estrogen – you can try some Milk Thistle tea to support the liver, and focus on blood sugar and stress management!

Hi, I was hoping I would find an answer through what I just read, but I don’t think I did. I started my period on the 6th of this month – around the date I’m supposed to – and I was supposed to end the 11th or 12th. Throughout the first five days that I’ve had my period for this month, it was super heavy – I had to change almost every hour and within the first two days, I had already leaked 4 times – and that’s never happened to me before. Probably on the third day of my heavy period I began to search things up. I kind of worried, but just pushed it aside, hoping it would be fine by the time I’m supposed to end. Until now, I am still bleeding. However, after the fifth day, December 11, the heavy bleeding stopped and so did my period, so I thought I was fine. But the next day, up until now, I have been bleeding very, very light – like I would have to wear a pantie liner and just change it every time I use the restroom. I’m scared and have not gone to the doctor because I do not want my mom to know in case it might have something to do with pregnancy…. I’d really appreciate it if you can help and tell me what is going on. Thank you!
With what you have explained it is very unlikely that it has anything to do with pregnancy unless you had symptoms of being pregnant before your period started therefore you already being pregnant more than a month or two and if it is so you NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR! It could be a sign of miscarriage which can be harmful to you and cause infertility in some women. I’m no doctor I’m just a girl who can’t conceive who has looked up and down near and far for pregnancy miscarriage and infertility symptoms. If you are still bleeding it needs to be taken care of properly pregnant or not you need to find the underlying problem especially if it’s related to pregnancy. If you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy at all it becomes even more vital to seek help. My best advice is GO SEE A DOCTOR. The internet will not solve your personal issues. It can only tell you what it could be not what it is. Special tests are needed and only a certified doctor who is able to examine your body is capable of diagnosing what is really happening. Don’t be stupid. Also talk to your mom she probably knows more than you think and can be more helpful than me. If you are pregnant she may get angry and seem like she’s going to kill you but trust me even accidents can be your greatest treasure. I know from experience of my sister who got pregnant at 17 and is now married and on her 3rd kid. Her first kid brought her closer to my mom than ever before because my mom knew my sister needed her. A mother May get upset or even angry enough to kill but a mothers love never waivers especially when her child is in need of help
I got off my period but i had brown blood awhile after, 2-3 days is normal for me but its been about 6 days now and i started to get worried. Now its gone from brown back to red and so much more then i need to use tampoons again…i dont know what could be happening and im scared..ive always been regular since i started..
Hi Rose,
Brown staining is a sign of low progesterone: take vit C daily for a few months, get enough sleep, and support your body with healthy foods. I could be a good idea to see your gyno if you are concerned!

Hello
Normally my periods are every 35 days mabe it more as i have psco and sometimes can miss a month
I started my period day after me and my partner had sex. But this months period is soo light only really noticable when i wipe my self but lasts longer than my usual which is 3 to5 days this is my 6th day and still shows blood on and off when i wipe which is red blood iv never had a period so light. And lasts this long i been under a lot if stress latley so dont no if this has anythink to do with it. And have major anxiety over it i worried over everything lol its annoying
What do I do if I am 34 years old and I am getting medium heavy periods for longer than 10 days and I have a copper IUD what natural remedies can I do caution I have epilepsy
Hi Joanna,
Heavy bleeding is a sign of estrogen dominance, and the copper IUD can exacerbate high estrogen levels. If you have epilepsy that is connected to your hormonal balance, you do want to work with your doctor on this! The WomanCode protocol provides natural ways of balancing hormones using foods and lifestyle, so is very safe. I recommend that you start with a visit to your Obgyn to discuss other pregnancy prevention methods. Good luck! XO
Alisa
I get depressed on the 5&6th day..
Can you tell me what is causing this?
Also, it has always been brown on this last couple days
Hi Sam,
Brown spotting indicates low progesterone. And the depression can be due to the drop in estrogen and also low progesterone.
Alisa
Well that explains my random cravings for some scrambled eggs and bacon lol. So says the underweight girl who forgets to eat almost every day. I don’t mean to I just don’t feel hungry most of the time. This article makes sense and I’m going to see if this theory of changing my diet will give me regular periods and also hormonal balance. Wish me luck
Hi, Well yes this makes a lot of sense!!! Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I’m 32 and I take Amethia generic for Seasonique. I get my period every 3 months. I got my period last Wednesday and have very heavy bleeding and very dark blood clots that are fairly big in size. My last period was the same way and lasted 12 days of which 5 days was brown blood towards the end. I really don’t know what the cause of the blood clots and longer periods is. I have taken the actual Seasonique and I was told by the pharmacy that Amethia was cheaper. The first 6 months on Amethia, I didn’t have a problem and I am taking the same 0.15 mg prescribed. Does someone have an answer? Are my hormones off balance? Am I getting too much or not enough? I know my mom had period issues when she was my age but being on birth control helped her.
Hi, It sounds like you are experiencing higher than desired estrogen levels for your system – unfortunately hormonal birth control can only mask this, sometimes. I would highly suggest that you explore other, optimally non-hormonal, birth control methods. And start to look at how to rebalance your hormones using natural methods – it is so possible!

Hi. I am 35 years old and have 3 kids. My youngest is 6 months. I didn’t have my period for 3 months after i had him. My first period was very normal. The past 2 cycles have been weird. For 7 days before my period was due i had spotting. Then my period starts with heavy- medium bleeding and 2 days later stopped abruptly. No brown spots or anything. Been like this both times. What could be wrong? My ladt baby was vbac after 2 c sections, if that makes a difference. I am usually so in tune with my body. I am freaking out over this! Please give me some insight!
What are the sources of your information? Are there any scientific studies that support these claims?
Hi, I am 35 years old. I have one kid who is 10 years old.i didn’t have my period for 8 years. I wish I can have second child, but …….please give me some advise. Thanks!
I need help, my period only lasted 3 days about a week ago and now I’ve come back on! This is the first time.
Hi Amy,
I would recommend going to see your obgyn to get some hormone test done. It can be hormones or thyroid issues.
Alisa
Hi Flo,
What about irregular cycles? Is there a FLO-fix? And which hormone does it point towards?
Hi Kate,
It really depends! If one hormone is off, it affects everything. If you want to find out more, please feel free to schedule a free initial consult with one of my counselors – they will be able to help you understand how our protocols work, and how you could benefit from them!

Hi. I have 4 children and after my 4th son and a tubal 6 years ago, my periods became very very heavy. I would wake up in a puddle of blood. Had to change my tampon once every 45 mins or I would have a big mess. Recently I’ve begun eating clean. Ive recently also just completed a 10 day green smoothie cleanse. I am happy to say that my last two periods have been normal. Not bleeding all over myself. I still run to the bathroom every 45 mins to an hr to check myself out because thats what I am use to. Now I’m not afraid to leave the house, shift positions, or even sneeze.
I can so relate to your last sentence. What green smoothie did you use? t hanks
So idk if I got my period or not but its my second period and it came 18 days late is that normal for a second period to come late and it’s super super light like sometimes there’s no blood in my pad and when there is its like comes in a translucent slime. Should I be worried please help and I’m only thirteen and I’m not pregnant. It would be a lot of help if you replied????☺️
Hi i have a question usually my period has a heavy flow kinda and is like a darker red, doesnt cut off,and is a 5 day period.. But this month for some reason it it was a bright red and not very heavy flow and it only bleed alittle that lasted for 2 days(17th-18th)then it stopped on the 3rd day around the morning i waited and it cake back on around towards the evening and it was a little darker in color but still not alot and then it stopped again and hasnt came back on yet its just a brown color when i wipe…Why is it like that? Whats wrong with me?
Thanks for all the tips but I have a question. I started my period a week early on a Tuesday and it was really heavy all the way through Wednesday it even made me light headed then Thursday it got light and Friday I had sex with my boyfriends and he asked me to take the moring after pill so I did the next day Saturday I stopped bleeding for about 12 hours so I thought my period was over and I had sex again but I started bleeding again and we never finished but the bleeding only lasted half the day and I stopped but I woke up this morning Sunday and I started bleeding again. Am I okay?
Hi Rebecca,
I would get to your obgyn to make sure everything is ok. Spotting can be a results of hormonal fluctuations, and the morning after pill can/will affect hormones. Please get check out.
Alisa
If anyone can help me a little, I’d truly appreciate it! ever since i started feeling like my periods were too often, or too long, i downloaded period tracker to my smartphone.
i’ve calculated my cycle as 7 days max, since i am normally 4-5. but the last 3 have lasted 10 days or longer. I’m super tired, i look pale, my back and legs are weary and sore. i have no free clinics in my area, the county shut them down, and no insurance- i can’t afford over 200.00/mo just for myself.
i had a incident back in 2015 march where i had missed for 7 weeks then suddenly got my period very heavy and painful with alot of clotting. i called the nurse and the nurse told me “hormone buildup.” could it have been a miscarriage? and could that be causing all the issues since then?? i know of the last 3 months being off, but i remember this happening since then earlier.
Hi there,
Ok, so you may be anemic due to heavy bleeding and long periods. Try Floradix Iron supplement – it’s a liquid. Whatever the cause, you have some hormonal disruption – pick up a copy of my book, WomanCode; This will introduce you to the protocol I use to support women to heal their hormones. There are tips you can start to learn and apply right away! Hang in there, there is help!

Hi,
I’ve alway had fairly regular periods 28 day cycle, lasting about 6 days generally not heavy apart from one day. Last month mid cycle felt horrible sick light headed pain and back ache period came early by about a day then lasted for 9 days but was very light just sporting for last 3.
Have period again was exactly 28 days from start of last one to this one, feeling bit panicky as I’m tired achy all the time, any advice? keep reading things online and getting worked up!
Hi Helen,
It sounds like there are some, perhaps subtle, hormonal fluctuations that are causing these symptoms. There is so much you can do! You can start by reading WomanCode, or find our more about the programs we offer. Let me know how I can support you.

Hi there I was hoping that you would be able to help me out.
I’ve done so much research but nothing is helping me.
So I’ve been tracking my period for the last 5 yrs and they are on time. But this last period was really weird it was very very light n Brown I didn’t even need to use anything but I did just in case it started its full on rush out.
But it didn’t and it last for a little over 5 days but still just spotted on to the tampon.
My next period is due in a week but need some help to ease my mind
Thanks in advance
It was Brown the whole time with a spot of pinkish spot
I’m 20 years old today is my expected period date on my calendar. Woke up with some cramps and started bleeding in the late afternoon. As expected. Put a tampon on and went on with the day. I went to change the tampon for a pad for over night and noticed that the blood was lighter than normal and also pinkish and brownish. Usually my first day is light but not this light. Should I be concerned or is my period just being slow and hasn’t picked up yet? It’s exactly on time but the flow is off. I haven’t had any nausea, excessive urination or bloating or any of those kinds of symptoms. I’ve been fine for weeks and had my pms symptoms a week ago per usual. Am I freaking out over nothing but some hormonal changes ?
Hi Ronnie,
You can learn a lot about what your period is trying to tell you once you start to understand the symptoms! If you have not already, you can pick up a copy of my book, WomanCode. I also have counselors available for you to speak with if you want more info!

My period came early this month by 3-4 days. I received penicillin shots for Strep throat around the time of ovulation. Now (CD1), I have cramps that are worse than normal and my flow is light/medium, but I have clots every time I use the bathroom and on my pad. I have also been very fatigued since yesterday. Should I be concerned?
Hi Mel,
Your period can get off track due to illness and the antibiotics. Support your gut health with probiotics!

My 12 year old daughter has been telling me she started her period about a year-and-a-half ago, when I noticed some blood on her pants. But ever since then I’ve noticed no more symptoms and she never asks me to replenish the pads or even uses the ones in the bathroom. I asked her about it the other day and she told me that she only has very very light spotting for just a couple of days every month. She said washes her clothes every night and doesn’t feel the need to use pads. Now I am worried that something might be wrong with her, those are not normal periods from what I understand. What can I do to help her? How can I encourage her to be more open and talk with me about it? Is there something wrong with her? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Mother
Hi Tiffany,
The early cycles can be irregular, but if this persists it is worth looking into, for sure. You can learn more about what all this can mean and how to support her by reading WomanCode – I talk about all this stuff in there! Let us know if we can help further – I have counselors you can speak with.

Hi,
i know this post is long but it is extremely informative for me.
I am a french african of 33 years old and I stopped my birth control implant almost 3 years ago. And It took me almost 8 months to get my period back. And for the last 2 years, i have had my period every 28 days. However my period is very short and last only 2 days heavy and the 3rd day is really light. Also, I have cystic acne consistently on my face. Sometimes I can manage it with skincare, sometimes not. I decided to take natural supplements because i am starting to feel bad about my acne and my infertility. I am still young but not that young anymore. My husband took his sperm test and everything seems to be fine. As for me i have slight elevated testosterone so maybe this is why i have big deep cystic acne around my jawline and chin. So should i take vitex? Because I read that vitex is not good for people with regular periods? Should i take saw palmetto for my acne or DIM. I am really lost. I live in congo and i do not have access to naturopath doctor. I dont want to take more synthetic hormones, i really try to even things naturally if that is possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Christelle,
Yes, try Saw Palmetto and support your body with nutrient dense foods and veggies!
Alisa
My period is not stable. I got it 3 days late than it should have been. It was dark red first day and then all done on the third day. I still feel bloated and nauseaus.
Is there anything to be worried about?
Is this normal period or pregnancy period? Although i didnt have intercourse.
Hello mam,
With Me its like I had been having irregular periods earlier there was need to change atleast 2 pads a day but then decreased to 1 pad and flow was of 2-3 days max. Last month I changed only 1 pad throughout my menstrual cycle that is I had a 1 day period. This month I am waiting for it.. last to last month I got on 15 th (3days) last month on 27(1day). And one more information I would like to give that my face is full of pimples and it’s marks since 3 years. Plz do help me. I don’t like using mirror much as I can’t c myself this way.
I think my comment got buried as a reply >_<. Messy and clotty, usually long menses since teenhood.
Would rasberry leaf, vitex and thistle be a good combo to help?
Hi Ginger,
Vitex and Milk Thistle are great, I would not use raspberry leaf right now. And remember that supplements will work well only in combo with the right diet and lifestyle! Keep me posted on how it goes!
Alisa
hi
I always have irregular period ranging from 4-5 days with normal to medium flow.
but from last 2 months I am just spotting red for few hours on the first day n then brown spotting for rest of 5-6 days. this is happening from past 2 months. I am having high tsh and prolactin.
please confirm
Hi im 47 i got my period then stopped for 2 weeks and got it again very light for 3 weeks my right breast has sharp pains and like a burning filling sometimes i also feel tired alot could it be menapause
Hi Kim,
I would recommend that you head to your obgyn and get checked out – makes sure you get a breast exam as well to rule anything serious out. I would cut caffeine entirely, and look at ways to support your health and reduce inflammation using diet.
Alisa
Hi,
I’m 24 and have always had irregular periods. I’ve had super short ones, brown, red, 2 in month and even didnt have a period for 8 month. I only recently went to get it checked out, when noticed that my period didnt stop. It has been going on for 2 and a half months now. It was very light spotting at first, but for the last week been very heavy with cramps and a bit of clotting. I had tests done a three weeks ago (bloodwork and ultrasounds) and am supposed to get my results in my next appointment which is in about a month! Do you guys have any advice? or have had a similar experience? What herbs can help me stop this period?
I forgot to mention that I started the Whole30 diet about a mounth ago where I eat heathy and avoid dairy, grains, junk food, sugars, basically anything that might upset my stomach.
I’ve been having my period for several years now, and each time it never lasts for more than 3 days. It usually is 2 days with a lot of clotting and what not. What does that indicate?
I have been on birth control since 9th grade im now 21 i finally got of birth control but start noticing my periods becoming lighter i was use to have 7 day periods now it last 4 days first two days heavy.3 day light spoting the the 4th day nothing. And i use to get cramps then they stopped now i have very lite cramps to no cramp.
Could it be cysts.
Help please
Hi Whitney,
If you are concerned that you have cysts, please see your doctor and have some tests done. If everything comes back ok, it could be that you have some hormonal imbalance due to being on the pill. The Flo Protocol addresses all of these issues, and helps you understand what is going on with your body.
Alisa
What does oxidized blood at the end of your period mean? It should begin cranberry colored and end that way, correct?
Hi Audry,
Oxidized blood is brown blood, as opposed to red! And yes, you want red blood throughout.
Alisa
I have been dealing with a fibroid for the past year and I’ve mentioned to my doctor how I have seen an improvement by changing my diet to lower my estrogen levels. I’ve seen several doctors and they all seem to think that my heavy period is because of the fibroid and has nothing to do with diet. none of them have mentioned hormone levels or even checking them. I have both the first two period problems listed. I will try the milk thistle and drink more water. I am already eating more leafy greens and have stopped eating dairy foods.
I don’t know why my period is exceeding 7 days and it’s not heavy. And i want to know why. I don’t get cramps every period, which is good.
Anyone can answer my question? It would be much appreciated .Thank you
I suffer from all of this :(. So draining.
hi..i always have a regular period but last month in my period, im experiencing a heavy bleeding with clots that took for 5days and by dis time in 35 days cyle (menstruation-expecting) i’ve been experiencing in my menstruation a brown blood with light flow in 3 days now.. its a first time. is it a normal? ive been active in sex and no birth control..
I had an unusual period this month and it’s really been bothering me because I don’t know what it means. The first day was normal, light-medium flow and the usual cramps that are always worse the first two days. But then for the rest of my period it was brown. Anyone have any idea what this could mean?
Thanks
Hello. I am 28 years old. Started my period whilst in the 6th grade also. Had complicated cycles for a long while then got placed on birth control when I was 17 to help regulate and decrease the blood amount and cramps. Ive had a lot of abnormal Pap smears in the previous years but the colposcopies have all come back fine and I’ve never been told I have any type of disorder or disease such as HPV. I came off birth control in January of this year trying to conceive. I’ve had normal consistent 28 day cycles for the past 4 months and plenty of ovulation symptoms including mittelschmerz pains as well as positive ovulation predictors. Cycle day 1 started today but my flow is very different than the past few months. It’s very dark purple and very thin. And today it came with a cluster headache that lasted from 4 am until 2 pm. I don’t usually get headaches associated with starting my cycle. I feel very off and could have sworn I had pregnancy symptoms and I’m not a crazy symptom spotter like I’ve read on the internet. Any clue as to what may be going on with my cycles? And why I haven’t been able to get pregnant? I can’t get in to see my OBGYN until 2 months from now.
Hi Steph,
It sounds like hormones are off just a bit. Are you able to schedule a complementary consult with one of my counselors? They will be able to give you an idea of what is going on, and what approaches are available to you! If you are interested, please email [email protected].

Hi!
I was due for my period on 10.26.16 (Wednesday) on Tuesday 10.25.16 I starting having brown discharge. On Wednesday I had the discharge as well. Thursday 10.27.16 I had heavy bright red bleeding with no clots. When I wiped it was more of a pink/red color. Friday, same thing but when I would wipe it was more of a watery pink color (no clots either) until about 9 pm when I was getting ready for bed. I took my tampon out and noticed there was barley anything on it. From 9:30pm until Saturday 10.29.16 around 1:00 pm there was NOTHING – no period, no discharge. I took a home pregnancy test in the morning (Saturday) just to see but it was negative (not sure if it was too soon to take though) From 1 pm until Sunday morning it came back and was very light and still a bright red color. Sunday morning until about 8:15 pm I had changed my tampon once and it was barley filled. I put a pad on overnight and NOTHING. Now the bleeding has stopped. What is going on? My normal cycle lasts 7 days and is very heavy for 2-3 days and then gets lighter but the color always remains a deep red/brown. My period has never just stopped like this before and it’s never been this short. Was this in fact a period?
Hi Lauren,
Please go check in with our obgyn.
Alisa
I am 24 years old. My periods were due on Oct 4, 2016. I got periods on Oct 13, 2016 but I am experiencing light bleeding. I can see red, dark red or brown blood when I wipe with toilet paper but very less or no stain on liner. This happened for about a week from now i.e. Last Sunday. Today I am experiencing a more bleeding than before while peeing and some light blood on regular pad. I took two pregnancy tests so far- both negative. I don’t experience any other pregnancy symptoms except this light bleeding, fatigue and mood swings. Can you help me figure out what can it be? Am I preganant or not? I don’t have endometriosis as I had surgery for fluid filled cyst 2 months before. Please help me I am so stressed because of this type of bleeding. Thanks, Nira!
Hi Nira,
I would recommend that you go speak with you Obgyn and have this looked into. It could be your body’s response to stress, if there is more than usual. It could be you hormones have gotten a little out of balance. Do reach out if you want to speak with someone at Flo about it!
Alisa
Hello,
My problem is not on your list…I was wondering if you or anyone could help me with this as I can’t seem to find my specific symptoms anywhere!
In the last few months, I have been having a short cycle of about 2 days…however, there is no light bleeding throughout. Instead, the FIRST day is very very heavy, THEN the 2nd day it is light (similar in lightness towards the end of a normal period). Prior to this recent change, I used to have cycles that were 4-5 days. Also, I have noticed an increase in unwanted facial hair growth. I’m pretty sure the two are related. I am not taking any medications or birth control pills, and my doctor ran tests including a blood test test for certain hormone levels and a pelvic ultra sound of my uterus. Everything came back negative…I do not have PCOS, and yet my period has just suddenly gone wrong and the side effect of coarse hair growth on my face is occurring in conjunction.. Would you have ANY idea what is causing this change and how I can regulate my period and hormones to start having a normal 5-7 day cycle and NO unwanted facial growth?! Any ideas would be helpful.
Thank You
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I’m in my late 20s.
Hi Chila,
I think you are doing the right thing by reaching out and doing your research. Changes like these are not “nothing,” nor are they normal.
If you have several years of blood work, I would go and compare these past results with the test from prior years – see if you notice a shift in androgens/testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. Also look in your life: has something changed in your diet or lifestyle in the last year? This could be a reason for things getting wacky. Please reach out to my team if you want to consult with one of my counselors, we offer free initial consults.
Alisa
Hi Alisa,
Thank you for your reply. My doctor did want to brush it off because of my seemingly normal test results and his ruling out of PCOS. However, I persisted and requested he refer me to a specialist whom I won’t be able to see until several months away! I would certainly like to reach out to your team for some assistance with getting this matter under control as it is causing me to become depressed.
Thank You.
Hey. Your article was pretty helpful. I just have one question. The thing ks that I’m one of those women who have heavy cramps during their periods. But this time it suddenly changed, my periods didn’t hurt me at all. Should I be worried? Should I be happy? How can this change over just one cycle? Yes, I’m sexually active and I’m afraid of getting pregnant as well. Hence, this question. Thank you 🙂
I forgot to mention that I’m in my early 20s and my periods this time seemed quiet normal except the cramp part.
Hi Aindry,
It could be that something you were eating, feeling, or doing created a change in your hormone levels this month, which is great! I know it can feel really hit or miss until you learn more about what actually effects your hormones, but this is a great sign! Try to remember what you did differently this past month, and hold on to that. Shifting hormones can happen quickly, and you can be in control of that : )

Hi, so my periods have been regular for years and came like clock work. I would bleed a little heavy the firsr two days then nothing the third then light bleeding the fourth and fifth day. Until about 6-8 months ago or longer. I have extremely heavy bleeding and clots but for only two days. I actually went to the E.R. in August because I felt like I was goimg into labor. They did a pelvic exam and checked for STDs and everything came back all good. I have a two year old born via c-section but like I said before this all started earlier this year! I was wondering if you’d ever heard of this?
Hi Julie,
Your cycle can change as your body and stressors change! Our bodies are constantly responding to the feedback and care it is receiving. Look at what has changed in the last year or so (you have a small child, I am sure a lot has changed!), and see how the areas of nutrition, self care, sleep, stress may be effecting you!

Hi, don’t know whether you can help. I had a baby 16months ago and breast fed up until he was 13months. My period returned soon after. It comes around 28 – 30 days. After day 3 of my period it stops completely and then restarts the next day and gradually get lighter. What causes this? Also it seems to last longer than before I had a baby. But the last 2 days, it is almost like a pink discharge (spotting). What causes this? Many thanks
HI, very interesting article 🙂
I am wondering what exactly counts as a “bleeding day”. In my case, for instance, I will bleed more strongly on the first two days, and then, for the next 3 days or so just a tablespoon of blood per day (aprox). So does that count as a 2 days period or as a 5 days period?
Thanks for spreading this amazing knowledge!
Ina.
Hi your article are interesting please need a quick reply I don’t understand my period any more usually see my period 3 to 4 days, but now i bleed heavily on the first two days an the thirth is just one tablespoon or even less of a tablespoon. My question is? Is t normal.
Hi Racy,
Shifts in your period can happen. It is important to take the bigger picture into consideration.
Alisa
Hi, I am 38 years old. I had a very light period that lasted 3 days, about 3 weeks ago (it was about a week late). It returned 6 days ago (started off light and is now heavier, some clotting). It has been consistently lighter than it was in the past, which I was happy about. I used to have very heavy periods and was anemic, but the heaviness stopped about 5 month ago. I was tested for fibroids and cysts about a year and a half ago. I’m not used to a lighter period, close periods, or a period that goes past 5 days. Could this be hormonal? I also have occasional moments when I am hot and moodiness from time to time.
Hi Kay,
Yes, this certainly sounds hormonal. Lighter cycles, hot flashes, and moodiness could be signs that your hormones are fluctuation a little more extremely than usual. Please let my team know if you would like to speak with a counselor to discuss options! There is so much that you can do to support yourself!
XO Alisa
I’m 21 years old and my periods are nearly constant. I’m always on iron pills because I’m always bleeding. It’s impossible to know how short my cycle really is because the bleeding doesn’t stop. It’s not as heavy as it was when I was younger, but it is constant. My testosterone levels are through the roof. I was on the pill for a number of years and came off of it in July. The bleeding began in the beginning February. What supplements/foods do you recommend to stop this bleeding, support healthy iron levels and get a normal cycle?
Hi Shedira,
First, please go speak with your doctor to see if they can see what is going on.
Second, please schedule a half our session with one of my counselors so they can assist you further. There is more info that is needed in order to get a more accurate picture. You can do that by contacting [email protected]!

I’ve always experienced heavy flow on the first 2-3 days, clots on the 4th and 5th days, light on the 6th and 7th, and cramping all throughout on my period and always thought it was just normal! Then this month I notice I’ve started bleeding, but a tad early, quite lightly, and with no pre cramps. I thought for a couple days it might be implantation bleeding and that I might be pregnant but then the bleeding continued so I searched the web and found this article. Looking back I guess I’ve been eating better: more greens, iron supplements, and more filtered water plus exercise. It’s so weird having a period with NO cramps whatsoever or clots! I’ll check in next month to see if I have the same experience.
Amazing! Congratulations : )
Alisa
Dear Alisa,
thanks for that article. I’m very much into your book, having PapIIId and very bad cramps on the first day of my period. And I’m now trying to follow your diet since two weeks more strictly.
So, I observed my period blood: My period is always like 4 days with clots and on the last two days it’s already pretty weak and becomes brown.
I always thought I’d have too much estrogen but a weak period doesn’t sound so much like that?
Hello! Thank you for this! I have been struggling for almost two years now with brown periods to start and all the awful symptoms that you’ve listed that come with it. My doctors found nothing wrong but I knew things weren’t right! I love that the fix is so simple and natural!
My question, however, is about my 8 year old daughter. She weighs almost 90 pounds and I fear that she is on her way to starting her period much earlier than she is supposed to. I have three other kids and non of them nor myself are heavy. My other three kids are string beans. I want my daughter to be so comfortable in her body so I would never mention this stuff to her but I’m wondering if her hormones are off???
Do you have any thoughts on hormones pertaining to young girls???
Thank you for your help!
Hi Jessica,
It is obviously hard to say anything definitive, but learning about how to support your diet through diet could be a great way to keep her on the right track hormonally. There are many foods that are in the standard diet that can contribute to hormonal imbalances in girls/ women. You can get a lot more info and insight into this by reading my book, WomanCode. I would start there!
Good luck, XOXO – Alisa
Hey Alisa,
What if I have experienced all 3 types within 1 period? Can I take Vitex and Milk Thistle together (not together but at the same time). Here’s my background. I used to soak overnight pads, changing twice a day. But my last 2 months worth of periods have changed drastically. This month, I started cramping 4 days before my period (which was 4 days late due to what I thought was late Ovulation, but I could have not ovulated at all) I woke up to brown spotting on the toilet paper, then went on to clotting VERY heavy that resulted in me going to the doctors. I’ve had blood work done and waiting to go for an ultrasound next week. Even with the heavy clotting and bad cramping (and blood) I never had to switch from panty liners to a full pad like I used to. I hardly soaked a panty liner a day. My period lasted 5 days. On the 6th day I had brown blood on the toilet paper again.
So I started with heavy painful cramps days prior, finally started my period with brown blood on toilet paper, more cramping (felt like I was trying to have my period but my flow was struggling to start) then passed large clots with minor bleeding, then my real flow finally started but not enough to soak a real period pad.
Things I know to change:
I don’t drink enough water, so I’ve changed that.
I definitely don’t eat enough protein or have a balanced diet, so I’m trying to change that.
So back to my question, can I take Vitex and Milk Thistle to help support the other “reasons”?
Thank you so muc Alisa!
Hi Sarah,
So glad you are making the changes to diet! This will help a lot. It sounds like progesterone is lower than it should be, especially in relationship to estrogen which sounds like it is getting too high. The real answer to this is diet and lifestyle – so please look more into this. Any supplement will only be a short term support tool. Vitex is helpful and milk thistle can be used as well.
Alisa
Thanks for this info! I borrowed your book from the library and started limiting my starch intake to 1/2 a cup and eating a lot of cruciferious vegetables to help detox the extra stress hormones. I’m going to try the flo fix for (1) brown, spotty stains to start and (2) heavy bleeding w/ clots. Can I address both flo fixes at the same time, or should I just start with heavy bleeding w/ clots since that one is more severe?
Hi Judy,
Take it at the pace that works for you. These are two related issues, so yes, you absolutely can tackle both at once!
Alisa
Very intetesting!
I have long had problems with horrid brown, and often burning, spotting and clots at the beginning of my period, and sometimes at the end too. I’ve always been a super light bleeder and often went 6wks or more between periods. Day 1 and 2 have at times been really painful. I’ve had 2 haemorrhage cysts that I know of, one being quite big. Seems to fit exactly what you said about low progesterone.
I’ve recently cut out read meat, and eat heaps of legumes and greens and a few eggs for extra protein. I didn’t see the connection until now, but over the last little while I’ve not experienced the brown spotting much, pain is tolerable, and cycle sticks to 30-35 days. Still very light and about 4 days long, but an improvement. You seem spot on.
dear alissa
im 15 and i have ben having heavy periods and blood clots and my priod lasts more then 3-5 days im worrried that this is a problem can you please help thx
Hi there,
The best way to start to understand what could be happening is to learn more: pick up a copy of WomanCode by Alisa Vitti – I talk about what creates hormone imbalance and how to heal! Good luck, and let us know if we can help!
Alisa
my period is usually pretty heavy but this time it’s abnormally light with lots of blood clots. Also I had TERRIBLE cramps the day before my period started. could this possibly be implantation bleeding? I’m YOUNG and am terrified of possibly being pregnant. help yall pls!!
What are your thoughts on clary sage/essential oils to help regulate/balance monthly cycles?

Sorry if this is a repeat there are just too many comments to read through. I am curious about anyone using one of the period cups and how you suggest getting started? I bought and just went right to it only that I realized I wasn’t prepared. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!
Hi guys.
It’s my period time, and I have been bleeding brown. My first day it was a little bit, and my second day it was a bit more than the first day. But it’s not that deep red, and it’s not a lot. Am I okay? Please help.
Hi, It sounds like low progesterone and estrogen. You want to work to bring these up using food and lifestyle.
Alisa
“Brown, spotty stains to start
Has your period started? What is that brown stuff exactly? Should you count this day as day one?
That brown stuff is old oxidized blood that didn’t make it out of your uterus last cycle. This is caused by low levels of progesterone. Low progesterone is the trigger for many period-related problems. You may also struggle to ovulate regularly in addition to having the odd coloration and you may also develop irregular cycles, or PCOS.”
So, should I count this as day one? The answer to that isn’t in the “flo fix”.
My husband and I are trying to conceive and trying to track my cycle is hard as I don’t know if the first day of my period is the brown stuff or the day when I come on for “real”. NB; I have 3 days of a light period with brown ish stuff (sorry, TMI) and then I have 1 day of quite heavy but not too heavy and one day even lighter. I just need to know which is counted as the first day 🙁
Hi Claire, You can count day one as when you start to bleed, not spot.
Alisa
Hi, the last 2 Months I have had the worst Periods ever. Last month I did not have cramping before the time, I had started my period as normal, and it was very painful. Heavy for the first 2 days and then just brown spotting for the remaining 5 days with cramps and even had cramps after the spotting stopped( usually I only have cramps on the first day) then this month I had cramps 2 weeks before my period started. And again it was 2 days of heavy bleeding and the remaining 5 days was light brown spotting. Very painful …. no moodswings. I’m quite concerned about this
I’ve always had a regular period starting around the same days and lasting about 7 days.
The last 5 ish months or so I’ve still gotten it like normal, but then a couple days after it ends I get brown spotting and sometimes its red or clotty. This sometimes lasts a couple days or more.
I’m starting to get frustrated because I never know when it’s going to happen or when it’s going to stop. And I’m not sure if this is something I should be worried about or if my body is just changing.
Hi,
I started my cycle at 14 years old and that will be 15 years ago in July. The lack of period cramps this month had me running to do research in hope to figure out why because this is the first time in my life I have not experienced them.
I cooked then ate 0.5 pound container of spinach the night before, and randomly woke up in the middle of the night to drink some liquid chlorophyll. I only did this because nothing else was in the fridge (just returned from out of town), I was thirsty and there was only a little of the bottle water left, so in my sleepy state making it stretch was a good idea.lol I also knew I had not been very good to myself while out of town in the regard of eating green leafy vegetables. The next day while out and about, my cycle started and mentally I wanted to get a jump on the cramps with the Motrin, but my lower abdomin was not aching per the usual, so I held off as long as I could only to find that I was not and was not going to cramp. I am going to try this again next month, and I pray to God this combination is the true fix for me because I have truly suffered to the point of feeling nauseous, dizzy, and lower back pain!! Now, I need to know how to combat the period tension/migraine headaches I am getting on the left side, which come before or after.
“Start looking before you flush every month, make the necessary food changes, and try Oona Cramp Relief for a natural alternative to ibuprofen.”
Start looking at what specifically? I am sure I’ve missed or misread something.
If you have taken the period test you will know what kind of period you have and what the quality of blood means. YOu can find this info on the website, or in the WOmanCode book!
Alisa
I have HEAVY bleeding with 2-5 clots in the first day. I often have to stay home because of the amount of blood I lose and the life-halting cramps I experience. I’m surprised I haven’t lost my lunch with my cramps. I also start and end with brown fluid.
I am trying a mix of different things to try and adjust my body’s cycle. I’m taking a B-Complex with B6 and Pre-Natal for boosted iron and magnesium. I’d like to try milk thistle and vitex as well.
Okay… so i had sexual activity the very beginning of March and took plan B like 25 hours after having sex and it has now been 3 months since. I have not had a normal period since, but i have like 1-2 days where i bleed and then it stops. It has clots but along with bleeding it only lasts for a day or two then repeats the following month? Is that normal from the plan B? I’ve had no nausea, no vomiting, a few cramps but that’s it? So confused though!
Hmm.hi I don’t know if am on my period or not cause my period last for five days but it last for 3 days this month and hardly come out on the fourth day..please is this normalising e
Hi,
If you are experiencing light periods, this could be a sign of hormone imbalance or anemia. Or, you could be having mid cycle spotting. Please do schedule a visit with your Obgyn to explore further and get more information on what is going on. We can then go from there.
Alisa
Does brown blood at the end of the period also indicate low levels of progesterone if it is normal for the beginning and rest of the cycle?
Thank you!
I am 23 years old. I got my first period when I was 10 and I experienced terrible cramps with it all throughout highschool (couldn’t get out of bed, medication barley helped, pain caused me to vomit). After highschool I went to ER for pelvic pain and they found cysts and said it will go away. Since then I had always had pelvic pain but my period cycles were normal. Recently, along with pelvic and abdominal pain, I have started to have problems with urinating. there is no burning or itching but I have been going more and it’s always an emergency. Now my period has started to get shorter as well. Normally lasting 5 days with a steady flow it has now been more random. I still get it every month but sometimes it will be one day, then next month 2 days then it stops but then a day later I will bleed again. And now this time I have a heavy flow for one day then some spotting for another 2 days. My stepmom thins I might have endometriosis because of this and also the pain I’ve always been experiencing. Or I have a cyst that has overgrown which could be causing the urine problems?
Any thoughts? I’m going to be setting up an appointment for an ultrasound within the next few weeks. I am nervous about ovarian cancer because my mom passed away from breast cancer and I read that what I’m experiencing can be some symptoms…but I think I’m too young for that.
Thanks!
Dear Alisa,
Thank you so much for your brilliant work; you have been such a blessing and have come into my life just when I needed it. Your idea inspired me to finally pluck up the courage and get of the pill I was on for 14 years.
I am 35 and this is my first month off the pill. I’ve just red your In the Flo & have been following your food, workout guidelines for the first month. I normally eat very healthy and workout regularly, so this was not really a big change for me.
I’ve expected my “first” real period to start on, say, day 28, but it’s started today, on day 40, so I am rather confused as to what week should I be following / syncing to now and how should I eat since this was supposed to be week 1 after my last “on-the-pill”/fake period.
Should I go back to my week-4 routine or continue as if it’s week 2?
My period is bright red, just right, I think.
I began taking the pill at the age of 21 because I was in a relationship back then and since I had
very irregular cycles (40 to 60 days), I didn’t want to stress out and make pregnancy tests each month.
Since then, I’ve lost 20 kg by fine eating and exercising and have been maintaining this gorgeous lifestyle for 10 years while on the pill.
I feel soooo lucky and happy with myself, run amazing two businesses, love what I do, and have moved from Slovenia to Tenerife to make my dreams come true.
I think going off the pill is really the “call of nature” starting to kick in, which is very new to me.
I trust that with your sycle-syncing method my beautiful body is perfectly capable of reclaiming Her hormonal health and that I will get my ovulation and regular cycle back to have a healthy baby (daughter;) at the age of 40.
I look forward to read your thoughts on the week 1/4 issue & send you a big hug from the island of Tenerife.
Here’s to a magical & perfectly aligned 2021!
Best,
Polona
